Hurst was also an innovator in the design of motor mount kits for engine conversions in hot rods, as well as the popular Hurst Shifters, which were available in three-speed and four-speed models. He was highly active in the early days of auto/drag racing and later, he would team up with his friend Bill Campbell to form Anco Industries. In the beginning, George Hurst, who had served in the US Navy, was a great strategist. Automotive historians have said that Hurst shifters were the industry’s fastest selling aftermarket item of all time. Hurst was in the business of creating and manufacturing gear shifters for high-performance automobile interiors and was originally based in Ferndale, Michigan. The Oldsmobile Division wanted a super 4-4-2 model that would be low in volume but high in performance, so George Hurst was ideal partner. Beltz and Bob Dorshimer that helped create the Hurst/Oldsmobile. It was Olds’ staffers Doc Watson, John B. The first Hurst Oldsmobile in 1968 (GM Media Archives)ġ968 was the year that George Hurst (1927- 1986) and General Motors’ Oldsmobile division came together to create a powerful and legendary muscle car. Images Courtesy of Getty Images, Barrett Jackson and the General Motors Media Archives Original footage of this legend is scarce, but thanks to YouTube user hairyolds1, you can watch the 1967 car's final run (and subsequent crash) in the video below.By Robert Tate, Automotive Historian and Researcher Though nearly six decades have passed since the Hurst Hairy Olds wowed the crowds, it remains a hero of the original muscle car era, and its story deserves to be heard by the younger generations. Rebuilt to its former glory by a dedicated team, which included chief engineer Animal Bob and driver Gentleman Joe, the legendary drag strip monster was sold to the Hurst/Olds Club of America for $1 in 2004. Thanks to the efforts of Oldsmobile enthusiasts Dennis Mothershed, who sourced the remaining components and kicked off an extensive restoration project, the 1966 Hairy Olds is now alive and well. The initial car built in 1966 was partially disassembled, and according to some sources, it was also scheduled to be scrapped, but fortunately, some of its components have survived. Fortunately, neither Joe nor those in attendance were hurt, but the car was deemed beyond repair and eventually sent to the scrapper. Its final public appearance was at the Niagara Dragway in New York, where it crashed spectacularly. The Hurst crew continued the promotional tour in 1967, then returned with the second car in 1968. There were actually two cars, and one is still aroundĪfter electrifying the crowds during the 1966 season, the car was retired, and Joe was given a new one that featured minor improvements. As you would expect, it became an instant legend, gathering huge crowds everywhere it went. The Hairy Olds, driven by Gentleman Joe dressed in a custom, tuxedo-like Bell fire suit, debuted at a meet in Bakersfield, California, in March of 1966, then went on tour all over the country. Moreover, the front wheels toed in so much that the car was all over the place regardless of how much Joe wrestled the steering wheel, and the huge clouds of smoke it produced made it almost impossible to see anything through the windshield or rear window. During initial test runs, the twin-engined monster proved nearly impossible to handle at full throttle as the insane amount of torque it produced pushed the front suspension assembly close to the point of self-destruction. Gentleman Joe was initially reluctant but eventually accepted the job when George Hurst's right-hand man, Jack "Doc" Watson, promised him that he would only have to show up, shred a set or two of tires and go home.Īs it turned out, the task of taming the Hairy Olds was not that easy. Thus, Hurst contacted drag racing legend " Gentleman Joe" Schubeck, who was enjoying retirement by running his own company -Schubeck High Performance Solutions. Building this four-wheeled insanity was quite the feat, but launching it down a drag strip at full speed required a legendary driver who happened to be naturally ambidextrous. Her pants were off and suddenly we were taking pictures. Janis, I said, don’t take your f***ing clothes off! It was too late. Quoting Seidemann, “After I’d gotten what I wanted that day,” Janis said, Oh motherf****r! I want to take my f***ing clothes off. He shot several rolls of black and white 35mm film of Janis with a nipple peeking through the beads. According to Seidemann, he’d wanted to shoot Joplin just topless, but she insisted on full nudity.Īsked to describe the scene in his studio the day Janis arrived to pose for the nude poster, Seidemann says that originally the plan was for her to be bare only from the waist up, except for a cape and some beads. The image captures a glimpse of hippie idealism during the late ’60s and ’70s. The photo of Janis Joplin nude became her most iconic image when it was published in Rolling Stone Magazine after her death in 1972. For all its incompleteness (or maybe because of it) Pearl remains a jewel in the short, gaudy career of a true original.Click HERE for The Best Janis Joplin Music, Merch & Memorabilia! “Standing Nude” The aptly-titled song remains an instrumental as Janis died the day before her vocal was due to be added. There's a gaping hole at the center of this great album in the shape of Nick Gravenites' Buried Alive In The Blues. Even a track as throwaway as the a capella Mercedes Benz has a warmth that makes one wonder how she would have continued to mature. Pearl's most famous track - Klris Kristofferson's Me And Bobby McGee - is a song that wouldn't have suited her in 1967, but now her voice delivered it in a near definitive style. The Full Tilt Boogie Band keep her grounded on a song like A Woman Left Lonely which would, in earlier times, have allowed her to become too self-indulgent. Pearl, conversely is the sound of an artist growing up. Her other great album, Cheap Thrills (with Big Brother.) is a fine record but sloppy in execution. Pearl is a smoother, more polished album than anything Janis had achieved previously. Working with Doors' producer Paul Rothschild, she recorded enough music to make up an album despite the cruel curtailment of the sessions due to her demise. It was to be her last recorded work.īy the fall of 1970 Janis' prolonged use of heroin had worn down a vast amount of the goodwill that she'd built up in the business, yet it seemed that her happiness with the band of young Canadian musicians served, at least for a brief spell, to assuage her inner demons. Following a tour in the Summer of 1970 she and the band settled down to record what would become Pearl. Following a year-long spell with the Stax-styled Kozmic Blues Band she finally assembled what she considered to be her own band - The Full Tilt Boogie Band. Yet two years later, following her rejection of the group with whom she made her name - Big Brother And The Holding Company, she began a search for a band who could allow her to rock out yet ground her more wayward tendencies. Her wailing rendition of Ball And Chain signalled the arrival of a feisty blues shouter who made up in attitude what she may have lacked in technique. Like another flower child whose legacy long outlived their brief spell on this world, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin achieved worldwide notoriety after her appearance at Monterey festival. Files that you add to the Vox Playlist remain there for later playback.Īnother couple of important features of Vox is its integration with Last.fm and, most importantly, its ability to stream thousands of online radio stations, although this last feature comes as a paid option at a very reasonable $0.99. You can add files to Vox’s Playlist from either displayed albums or any of your iTunes playlists and other sources. This makes it quite convenient, since you just have to toggle Notification Center to see what is currently playing. Playback itself is quite neat on Vox, which not only gives you the option to display the current album artwork on the app’s icon on the task switcher, but also integrates with Notification Center, something that even iTunes -inexplicably- does not do. You can drop files from iTunes right into the app or have it load your iTunes library, although I was sad to see it does not yet support iTunes Match, so if you have the service, you will have to download all the songs you want to listen to to your iTunes library first. Vox also allows you to play music from a few sources, like iTunes itself. One of the most interesting of these is its support for a variety of formats, including for FLAC, CUE, WMA and OGG files, which are not supported by Apple’s native music player. Yet, while minimal, Vox is anything but lacking and instead packs quite an extensive set of features that even Apple’s own iTunes doesn’t offer. It is quite obvious that the app is focused on remaining very streamlined. The moment you open Vox on your Mac, you will notice that it has a minimal design and a simple interface. Read on to see if it measures up to the challenge. This time, the free music player Vox takes the stage to try to become a suitable alternative to iTunes. So, when a capable Mac music player hits the market that does things differently, we’re bound to get interested. Be it its interface or its lack of certain features, there is no denying that iTunes is far from perfect. While iTunes is definitely a great music player, a lot of Mac users simply can’t deal with it due to one or another reason. Dao, bartender at New York’s Middle Branch. “Rye and applejack make for excellent bedfellows,” says Dan Q. Often, that second spirit is a whiskey, and especially rye. It’s also common to see bartenders use applejack in a split-base cocktail, a technique that “splits” the main spirit between two different components. The recipe uses the brand’s bonded (100 proof) version for a “sturdy backbone” to balance other powerful flavors like Fernet-Branca and maraschino liqueur. For example, the Newark, a New Jersey-accented play on the Brooklyn family of cocktails, focuses on the provenance of Laird’s. While legacy brand Laird’s is often the one called for in bartender recipes, a number of other excellent, smaller batch applejacks also are worth seeking out, including those made by Black Dirt Distillery and Harvest Spirits (Cornelius Applejack), both in New York’s Hudson Valley, along with Chicago’s Rhine Hall Distillery.Īs for how to use it, a strong-and-stirred template is often the go-to applejack can work well in applications like the Old-Fashioned or the Manhattan. She describes it as functioning like an “apple whiskey.” But whereas applejack (also known as apple brandy or “straight applejack”) must be produced from 100 percent apples, blended applejack is a blend of apple brandy and grain neutral spirits (this is a category that Laird’s petitioned for it was passed in 1972). “Essentially applejack and apple brandy are interchangeable terms,” explains Lisa Laird Dunn, executive vice president of Laird & Co., which has been producing applejack for nine generations. That confusion is compounded by the fact that there’s more than one type of applejack. Known as “freeze distillation” or “jacking,” the method is no longer permitted by regulators, but helps explain the modern-day version’s concentrated taste and often high proof. Rather than a suggestion of flavor, “applejack” is actually a historical reference to how the brandy once was made: Colonists would ferment and freeze cider, then drill a hole to extract the remaining high-proof liquid from the center. That’s in part because of the confusion about what exactly applejack is, and where it fits within the spirits canon. Still, applejack doesn’t typically get the same love for building cocktails as does Cognac (France’s famed grape brandy) or whiskey. This autumnal drink captures plenty of nuttiness and spice in the glass.
